Short Links on Social Media in 2026: Where They Work, Where They Get Wrapped, and Where They Get Blocked
Platform by platform: where links are clickable, which networks wrap or block short links, why some short links show no preview, and the rules for email and SMS.
Short links are useful on social media, but not for the reason most people think. On X, shortening saves you no characters at all. On Instagram, a link in a caption is not even clickable. What a short link does give you everywhere is a readable address people can type, a link you can update, and a count of how many people clicked. This guide goes platform by platform through what each network allows in 2026, checked against the platforms' own help pages where they publish them.
Short answer: On free Instagram accounts, links are clickable only in your bio and Story link stickers; paid Meta One business plans add links in posts and Reels. TikTok bio links need a business account or 1,000 followers. YouTube Shorts links are not clickable. X counts every link as 23 characters. LinkedIn wraps long links in lnkd.in. Pinterest does not allow some shorteners, and Reddit's etiquette asks you not to use them.
The rules at a glance
| Platform | Where links are clickable | What happens to a short link |
|---|---|---|
| Bio (up to 5 links) and Story link stickers; posts and Reels on paid Meta One plans | Links in captions are plain text on free accounts | |
| TikTok | Bio, if you qualify | Needs a business account, or a personal account with 1,000+ followers |
| YouTube | Long-form descriptions (with advanced features), channel profile links | Links in Shorts descriptions and comments are not clickable |
| X | Posts, bio | Every link is wrapped in t.co and counts as 23 characters |
| Posts, comments, profile | Links longer than 26 characters are reportedly shortened to lnkd.in | |
| Posts, comments, pages | Previews come from the final page after the redirect | |
| Messages | WhatsApp fetches the page to build a preview | |
| Posts, comments | Reddit's etiquette asks users not to use link shorteners | |
| Pins | Pinterest does not allow certain redirects or URL shorteners |
Links in normal captions are not clickable on free accounts. On 15 September 2026, Meta launched Meta One, and its business plans from Advanced ($49.99 a month) include "links in organic posts and reels," in a limited number each month. For everyone else, a caption link is just text. Clickable links live in two places: your bio, which can hold up to 5 links, and the link sticker in Stories, which all users can use unless their account is restricted for sharing misinformation or hate speech.
What this means for short links: in captions, people have to type the link. fattyurl.com/spring-sale can be typed from a caption. A random 30-character URL cannot. For your bio, use a separate short link per campaign so you can see which post sent the clicks.
TikTok
A clickable bio link requires, according to Sprout Social's 2026 guide, "a Registered Business Account, or a Personal Account with 1000 followers or more." Until you qualify, the same advice as Instagram applies: put a short, typeable link on screen or in the caption.
YouTube
On long-form videos, YouTube says that "to add clickable external links, you must enable your channel's access to advanced features." On Shorts, "URLs placed in YouTube Shorts comments and Shorts descriptions are non-clickable." The clickable alternatives are a related-video link on the Short and up to 14 links on your channel profile.
What this means for short links: in Shorts, say or show a short, readable link on screen. A custom slug that sounds like your campaign is far easier to remember than a random one. Our guide on how to shorten a YouTube link covers YouTube's own short links too.
X
X's help center is unambiguous: "All links (URLs) posted in posts are shortened using our t.co service," "a URL of any length will be altered to 23 characters," and "you cannot opt out." X also checks links "against a list of potentially dangerous sites."
What this means for short links: shortening saves zero characters on X. Use a short link there only for click tracking or to keep a readable, branded address in the post text.
Bitly's help center reports that "when a link is shared that's longer than 26 characters, LinkedIn automatically shortens it when you click Post," using lnkd.in. LinkedIn's own help pages on this could not be read when we checked.
What this means for short links: a short link with a short slug may stay visible as you wrote it. Either way, a link counted by your own shortener still counts the clicks that reach it.
Facebook's documentation for sharing says to "use an HTTP 301 or 302 redirect" and that "the sharing details that Facebook uses are the ones at the final link in the redirect chain." In practice that means the preview shows your destination's title and image, as long as your shortener redirects on the server.
Facebook has blocked a shortener domain before. In 2010 it blocked Bitly's j.mp links, saying most pointed to spam. We found no current block on mainstream shorteners.
WhatsApp's business messaging documentation says "WhatsApp will crawl this URL and attempt to generate a link preview," using the page's Open Graph tags, which must appear within the first 300KB of the page. WhatsApp's "suspicious link" label is about unusual characters in the address, not about shorteners, and the check happens on your device.
Reddit and Pinterest
These two are the least friendly to shorteners. Reddit's etiquette page asks users not to "use link shorteners to post your content," because "there are few reasons to hide what you're linking to." Individual communities often enforce stricter rules. Pinterest's help center says "we don't allow certain redirects or URL shorteners," and recommends linking to the final page.
What this means for short links: on both, post the full destination URL.
Why some short links show no preview
A link preview is built by a crawler that fetches your link, follows it to the destination, and reads the page's title, description and image. How your shortener redirects decides whether that works:
- Server-side redirects (301 or 302) work. Apple's guidance for rich previews in Messages says "server-side redirects are followed," and Facebook uses the final link in the chain.
- JavaScript and meta-refresh redirects often do not. Apple says link previews "do not follow meta redirects, nor run JavaScript." A 2021 test by Old Dominion University found X's card generator did not follow an HTML meta refresh either.
So if your short links show a blank preview, or the shortener's own name instead of your page, the shortener is probably redirecting with a page rather than on its server. FattyURL redirects on the server, so previews show your destination. You can check any shortener by pasting one of its links into a WhatsApp chat with yourself.
Email and text messages
Email. Gmail's sender guidelines do not ban shorteners, but they ask that "web links in the message body should be visible and easy to understand." Spam filters also keep lists of shortener links abused by spammers, so a readable link on your own domain is the safest choice for important email.
SMS in the US. Carrier guidance from CTIA says business senders who use a shortener should use one "dedicated to the exclusive use of the Message Sender." Many SMS platforms go further: ActiveCampaign states that "the use of free or public link shortener URLs is prohibited in SMS messaging."
SMS in India. Since 1 October 2024, carriers must block commercial SMS containing links that the sender has not whitelisted on the carrier's portal, as TRAI requires. TRAI later clarified that only the static part of a URL that identifies the sender needs whitelisting. SMS platforms quote TRAI's rule that senders "shall not use any URL shortening service or short URLs unless the shortened URL clearly indicates that it has a relation with the Sender." In plain terms, a generic public short domain, fattyurl.com included, is the wrong tool for commercial SMS in India. Use a link on your own domain instead, which you can whitelist. FattyURL's paid plans can serve short links on your own domain.
Ads. Google Ads says that if your "final URL or tracking template uses a URL shortener," you should "replace it with the direct, stable destination URL."
A checklist before you share a short link on social
- Use a readable custom slug wherever people might have to type the link. See our guide to custom short links.
- Make one link per platform so your analytics show which network worked. Our guide to tracking link clicks shows how.
- Test the preview by sending the link to yourself on WhatsApp or iMessage.
- Skip shorteners on Reddit, Pinterest and ad destinations. Use the full URL there.
- Check the destination still works before pinning a link for months. Our guide to whether short links expire covers what can break.
FAQ
Can you put clickable links in Instagram captions?
Not on free accounts. Since September 2026, paid Meta One business plans from Advanced up add clickable links to a limited number of posts and Reels each month. Everyone else can use up to 5 links in their bio and link stickers in Stories.
Do you need 1,000 followers for a link in your TikTok bio?
For a personal account, yes, according to Sprout Social's 2026 guide. A registered business account can add a bio link without that threshold.
Does shortening a link save characters on X?
No. X wraps every link in t.co and counts it as 23 characters, whatever its real length.
Why does LinkedIn change my links to lnkd.in?
LinkedIn automatically shortens links longer than 26 characters into lnkd.in links, according to Bitly's help center.
Can I use a URL shortener on Reddit?
Reddit's etiquette asks users not to use link shorteners, and some communities remove them. Post the full URL instead.
Why does my short link show no preview?
Preview crawlers follow server-side redirects but often not JavaScript or meta-refresh redirects. Use a shortener that redirects on its server, and make sure your destination page has Open Graph tags.
